Diveagar – Harihareshwar – Shrivardhan (Beach)

Diveagar Beach ThumbnailThis is Coastal Konkan within 200 KM reach from Pune. Gentle winds, soft sands and inviting waters make Shriwardhan-Diveagar irresistible to beach lovers. Also, If one relishes sea-food, there is no dearth of delicacies to sample here.

Adventurers can even take a small boat to the north side of the bay and explore a land where the Peshwas or prime ministers of the Maratha kingdom, originally resided. 18 Kms from shrivardhan is a small town Harihareshwar, which is known for its tranquil and picturesque beach and is also famous for the Shiva temple of Harihareshwar.

You can visit these places from Pune for 2 days (weekend) or for 3 days (recommended).

Getting There

Via Tamhini ghat (approx 200 km)

Diveagar

Diveagar Beach

Diveagar Beach can easily rival any beach on the west coast of India for its clear waters, white sand & serenity. Diveagar is situated approximately 5 Kms from Shrivardhan. Reaching Diveagar is quite easy, take a right turn after Mangaon on the Mumbai-Goa highway, from here it’s a one-hour drive to Diveagar. Diveagar is just like any other village on the Konkan coast but it gained overnight fame upon the discovery of Ganesh idol made of pure gold in one of the Supari Baghs (Garden) in the village.

The beach is a real revelation, a six km long stretch with white sand & clear water. At one end of the beach is a fishing settlement while the other end offers a sanctuary to the migratory seagulls feasting in the creek waters. The beach has a lot of Suru trees, which are common to coastal Maharashtra. The access to the beach has a dense cover of Belu trees, which are very uncommon sight on this coast.

Diveagar has numerous households offering accommodation for as low as Rs.300-400 per day. The local cuisines are worth exploring & better enjoy eating it as no other options are available. Diveagar is an ideal weekend getaway away from City crowd. Don’t expect any luxury hotels & typical city eating joints here but be prepared to be surprised by the simplicity & calmness offered by this place.

Suvarnaganesha (Golden Ganesh) Temple: History of Suvarnaganesha is quite fascinating. It was on the special day of November 17th, 1998 (Sankashti Chaturthi as per the Hindu calendar) that there was found a copper box beneath the earth. It was weighing 30 kilos in a coconut cultivation near the temple. The box was muddy as it was buried and looked ancient. It had some words written from the 10 century in Sanskrit. This incident attracted all the mob from the Diveagar village. This was the second incident that an ancient piece of history was found, as earlier there was found a “Tamraptra” at the same place. when the box was opened in presence of Govt Officials, there was a sculpture of Lord Ganesh made out of pure gold. Also the box contained ornaments belonging to Lord Ganesha. It was then that the god was named “Suvarnaganesh”.
Suvarnaganesh is a complete idol of Lord Ganesha, but a sculpture of pure 24 caret gold. Its weighted 1 kilo and 300grams,with height of 24 inches. It is said that this sculpture was created to mask some Lord Ganesh stone idol, which was earlier in the temple. However its still a puzzle as to who has buried it and for what reason. But people of Diveagar have tremendous faith in Suvarnagensh and that the god is blessing the place with prosperity.

Sundernarayan Temple: Also know as Rupnarayan temple, was believed to be built in the thirteen century, under the rule of King Shilahar. The idol is the best example of sculpture. The four hands of the idol along with their accessories Shank(Shell),Chakra(Wheel), Gada(Weapon), Padma(Lotus) are carved in such a manner that when seen in clockwise direction ,it shows 24 different appearances of Lord Vishnu.

Seashore: At the back of the Sundernarayn temple, there sea-shore of about 4-5 kilometers. The soothing sand beneath, the sea in semicircle appears to be calling. Beach is safe for swimming as against its neighour – Harihareshwar Beach which is not that safe.

Shrivardhan Seashore: Kondivali beach (5 Kms from Shrivardhan) – clean and unmarked by footprints.

Birthplace of Peshwa Bajirao I: 5 kms from Shrivardhan

Harihareshwar

Harihareshwar is one of the finest places in Konkan. It is famous for a temple on the seashore as well as the beach and the natural beauties here. Harihareshwar is only 18 Kms for Shrivardhan. If one wants to enjoy traveling by sea, the launches are also available between the two towns. The temple here is one of the major attractions. Harihareshwar is known as Kashi of Southern India. The hill on the seashore at Harihareshwar is also known as ‘Harihar’ or ‘Pushpadri’.

Harihareshwar Beach

The temple is old and the construction period of this temple can not be easily said. The temple might be constructed in Shivaji’s Period as one can find such sculptures. But was re-constructed by First Bajirao Peshawa in 1723. The temple consists of idols of Brahma – Vishnu – Mahesh and Devi Parvati. The other temples in the premises are of Shri Kalbhairav and Shri Yogeshwari.

Truly, Harihareshwar is a place of temples and beautiful seashore. The atmosphere here is very auspicious and creates pleasure. The seashore, beach , the dark woods near the sea and the temple are worth to visit.

Caution : Beach is not very safe for swimming especially during low tide. It has lots of undercurrents.

There are some details which haven’t been mentioned at this site:
Harihareshwar is one of the few temples where Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh all exist in the same temple along with Kal Bhairav
The place has a mention in old religious books as well.. its said that during Sur- Asur fight when Sur started losing the battle, Kal bhairav was created by lord Shiv (its a long story abt the creation) however when Lord Shiv asked him to fight against Asur, Kal Bhairav asked what he would get in return. Then it is said that this temple was created where Lord Shiv said before anyone visits me, he will have to visit you. If you visit the temple you have to enter it via entrance near Kal Bhairav’s idol. once you have paid regards to Kal Bhairav, you can go to the Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh temple and while on the route out again pay regards to Kal Bhairav.

Its also said Maharishi Agastya took samadhi at Harihareshwar (or sriwardhan) and bones from his samadhi were used to make the weapons.

If you climb down towards the sea side the rocks are cut in a foot shape. Locals believe that its Shripad ( God’s foot prints). Best time to visit is during low-tide. Also if you are lucky enough you may also see dolphins attracted to the area by the ships passing by.

The hills behind the temple also have a mention in Mahabharat. Its said that during agyatvaas the pandav brothers stayed in these jungles hiding from kauravs. You can also see couple of sandlewood trees there.

The best way to visit the place is on a Bike. Drive up to Harihareshwar.. visit the harihareshwar and sriwardhan beaches. Next day morning go to temple. After visiting the temple follow this route – Harihareshwar – Deogarh – Shriwardhan – khargaon – Shrevadi – Borli – Diveagar – Dighi. Take a boat ride to Murud – Janjira via boat and yes they will take your bike as well. If possible take the trip to during sunset.. its very beautiful. Once you cross over to Murud-Janjira you may choose to stay over night over there. Next day morning visit the forts of Murud and Janjira. drive up to Alibag. Visit the forts there and then you can catch a launch to Mumbai (Bhau-cha-dhakka/Ferry Wharf) and visit Mumbai.

You may want to try out the aam papad, and its equivalent made of Jamun and Peru (Amrud/Guava) in Harihareshwar premises. The best time to visit there is just after the monsoons. The thick and dense green foliage with white sands and blue seas is a treat for the eyes. There are few waterfalls on the way to harihareshwar from goa highway which will be active during Sept month. Dont forget to carry mosquito repellants (odomos etc). Stay safe and enjoy..

    Hope this info helps..

  • Aseem

Just repoding to some of the queries posted at this site:

Yes there are ST buses plying till Sriwardhan and some buses go up near harihareshwar. visit the following site for public transport and tours:
    http://msrtc.gov.in/tours.html

MTDC hotel and private hotels are available in the area.

Some additional info. – This area was also notorious area for all nefarious activities and used to be den of D gang. Even the infamous RDX for mumbai blasts had reportedly been unloaded at this place. Due to its location at Ratnagiri – Raigad border, Savitri river estuary that gives a peaceful port and 12 nautical miles India border, they made use of loop holes in state/district and country laws and used to flourish over here. Now it has been cleaned up to a great extent. Ask any local for more info ;)

All the people who are going gaga about Harihareshwar, please stop doing that. I along with my wife and kid visited this place over the weekend. We started from Pune via Bhor. You reach Bhor fine as you are on Bangalore Hwy. However, after that road is really really bad. For most part the road is even non-existent and you are basically driving on gravel. Bottomline, you torture your vehicle and body. Although, the driving landscape is beautiful but because of bad roads you cannot enjoy it a bit. It took us 7 hours to reach there. After reaching Harihareshwar, we literally got a shock of our life. The place is a joke. It is plain filthy. Especially, the filth around the temple (plastic bags) is a shame. Harihareshwwar beach resort is a joke. There is no way to get to the beach, one has to cross via filthy stream of backwater. On top it all, while we were there, there is a iron gate from where you can go to sea facing walkway, and right there there was a small pile of human shit! We were lucky as we did not get reservation in the Harihareshwar beach resort when I called them from Pune as they claimed they were sold out. When we reached there we saw other people who were not as lucky, they were stuck there as the resort has a policy of no refund.

One thing especially got my nerve and that is why the local gram panchayat can’t keep the temple surrounding clean? They charge much more than parking lots charge in either Pune or Mumbai and they cannot keep the temple surrounding clean? They should be ashamed of themselves.
