Jim Corbett National Park—named after the hunter and naturalist Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment—is the oldest national park in India. Situated in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, the park acts as a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India, the secure survival of which is the main objective of Project Tiger, an Indian wildlife protection initiative.
An ecotourism destination, it contains 488 different species of plants and a diverse variety of fauna. Once inside the park, the safari is great, you get to see very relaxing jungle views, several kinds of antelopes, birds, Langur monkeys, and of course- tigers!
Over 585 species of resident and migratory birds have been categorized, including crested serpent eagles, blossom headed parakeet and the red jungle fowl — ancestor of all domestic fowl. 33 species of reptiles, 7 species of amphibians, 7 species of fish and 37 species of dragonflies have also been recorded.
History
The park was originally named Hailey National Park after Governor Hailey and was created on August 6th 1936. It was India’s first National Park. After independence the park was renamed after the Ramganga River and was call Ramganga National Park. The park was renamed again 1957 after James E. Corbett, who helped to set up the park and spent most of his life in the area.
The area of the park was increased in 1991 when the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary was added to the park.
Climate
There are three well defined seasons in the Corbett National Park- the winter season which lasts from November to February, the summer season which lasts from March to June, and the rainy season which covers the rest of the month. The summer rains cause flooding in the park. The temperature in the Winters can go down to 4 degrees centigrade at night and the entire jungle is dry in the summer months as the temperature goes up to 44 degrees centigrade. The annual rainfall in the park ranges between 1400mm and 2800mm.
Get There
It is normally accessed from the town of Ramnagar, and is a two hour drive to the north.
The main areas (Dhikala and Bijrani) of Jim Corbett National Park are closed from 16 June – 14 Nov for the monsoon season. Jhirna & Sitabani (Buffer Zone)remain opened all year round.
See
Bengal tigers, although plentiful, are not easily spotted due to the abundance of camouflage in the reserve. Thick jungle, the Ramganga river, and plentiful prey make this reserve an ideal habitat for tigers who are opportunistic feeders and prey upon a range of animals. The tigers in the park have been known to kill much larger animals such as buffalo and even elephant for food. The tigers prey upon the larger animals in rare cases of food shortage, often in packs using the advantage of numerical superiority. The reserve has enormous boars, weighing up to 200 pounds, who provide a match for the tigers as a large male boar is capable of killing a tiger. There have been incidents of tigers attacking domestic animals in times when there is a shortage of prey.
Leopards are found in hilly areas but may also venture into the low land jungles. Smaller felines in the park include the Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat and Leopard Cat.] Other mammals include four kinds of deer (barking, sambar, hog, Black buck and chital), Sloth and Himalayan Black bears, Indian Grey Mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, ghoral (goat-antelopes), Indian pangolins, and langur and rhesus monkeys. Owls and Nightjars can be heard during the night.
In the summer, Elephants are seen in large herds of several hundred. The Indian python found in the reserve is a dangerous species, capable of killing a chital deer. Local crocodiles were saved from extinction by captive breeding programs that subsequent;y released crocodiles into the Ramganga river.

Very fine presentation. The writer deserves to be thanked for bringing to life such a beautiful part of India.
Its good to find that many ppl like to see this park. And luckily, I have been going there since I was 1 year old.
Now i m 21 yrs old and we usually have at least 1 trip in a year. Its almost 300 KM from Delhi. And the best season would be in winter.
You cannot stay for continuous 3 days in the park. And all the reservation are done in Ramnagar (a town near Corbett Park) . Dhikala and Bijrani are the most common place and so are they crowded . You can go to Sultan or Garil .
My Great Uncle was a prolific explorer and naturalist. Thank you for sharing his park with the world.

I have always seen a ‘Tiger’ in all my visits and that for me happens to be a highlight. Thanks to the efforts of the forest department its managers, its guards that some of the most beautiful sights in India are preserved for our futiure generations!
Hats off to them!

WHO WILL SAVE US FROM THIS PERIL !
wowwwwwwwwwwwww It’s beautiful!
Nice stills to show to my Kid
Hi….there is a small mistake in history section ….”1957 it was renamed after James E. Corbett, because he helped to establish it” …this statement is not correct because it was renamed after a hunter named Jim Corbett and reason was …Jim Corbett killed two dangerous man eater animals in Northan part of India and restored daily living….one was leopard who ate nearly 1000 and another was tiger which ate near to 400 and both were active near Alaknanda river so this park was named after him………
Nice park i want to visit it can you please provide me route from delhi.

It was a fantastic experience in December 2008 to visit corbet park. We could not get accommodation at Dhikala but we could get at Garel. I feel to stay at Dhikala is very convenient and easy for getting food etc. Moreover, Elephant ride is available only from Dhikala which we missed. Next time we shall go straight to Dhikala and Bijrani. Overall it was wonderful experience. My daughter aged 20 enjoyed the most at Corbet Park.

This is true india thats why we loved it. And we can proudly say that we are an indian.
Will Man stop the slaughter of the beautiful and majestic tiger ?
Can Indian Government prevent the illegal killing and smuggling of tigers into Nepal and then to China ?
Can we do anything at all to stop the gentleman tiger being forced into extinction and oblivion ?
Will my grandchildren have an opportunity to see the extraordinary and splendid tiger in flesh
and not merely in pictures ?
I like this very much. Ther is nothing to compare with nature.Because nature is the gift of god to humanbeings. He gave it to us and ask us to rule it and enjoy with it.Unfortunately nowadays the peoples are destroying it for their own benefits. My request is please try to develope it or otherwise do not spoil it and leave it as it is and the nature will take care of its own development.
with love and regards and giving thanks to lord JESUS CHRIST HE WHO created the world and this nature
……………..DAVID
I visited this National Park 50 years back. Its a beautiful natural forest with full of wildife. I would love to see it again.
sooooooooo great & wonder
This National park is very beautiful, I really appreciate, but it is far from Tanzania, I like much the place like this, If GOD wish one day I will be there to see the wonders of the world
Paul Ikanga { Tanzania-East Africa}
+255 713 279991.
Instead of spending crores of rupees in producing, buying and stocking arms and armaments and weapons of mass destruction,
Indian Government could well spend those amounts in protecting and conserving whatever little forests Indian subcontinent is presently having.
Will wisdom ever dawn on the Indian government – its politicians, policy makers and high level bureaucrats ?
Is ther anybody listening in New Delhi ?
There are only a few places left and they too are shrinking …
Will we sav them for our next generation ?
Instead of wasting money on weapons and arms of mass destruction,
could we not spend to save these places ?
I Like Pics, very beautiful, i want to see more pics and i wants to come Corbet National Park

not heaven in earth but better than heaven.thanks priya thanks a lot when ever u send this part i remember uttrakhand a lot that i cant cantrol my feeling and for few moments i was there in my village.i am very thank full to u thanks a lot.
what a wonderful experience it was to see my uttrakhand.
Had been there with my wife , who is also an aredent wild life and nature lover ( i am too lucky in that sense) BUT the sadest part is there are too many cottages and quite lot of crowd come there and have parties till early moring 0130 Hours with blarring music and so much of pollution ( noise, voice and littering) that i am sure, with no proper regulation from the authorities / govt. side , it is bound to get totally disturbed in the years to come .
We trekked some 16 KMs inside with the help of a local tribe , which was of course was a great experience.
BUT please all those who may read this please , please do something : let not people make this one more picnic spot where they come dine and wine and have blarring music rather noise going all through the night.
It is certaiunly an eyesore and heart hurting experience for people like us who truly love and would like to preserve nature …………
Mother Nature at her best!Excellent Photography.Seeing this any ordinary human will always cherish and worship mother nature and the hunter in the human will perish.I hope many see this beauty and just enjoy it!Thanks very Much Priya1

Exciting, thrilling, ecstatic and delightful News !
Here at Erode, a district Capital of Thamizh Nadu,South India, we have a film club known as Thirai Nanooru. It screens and conducts discussions on films of international caliber and repute. Most of the films screened are feature films.
But the month of August is different !
And unique !
Today (08.08.10) at 5.35 pm we are screening
TRUTH ABOUT TIGERS
a documentary about tigers to awaken the conscience of the peole to save tigers.
Will the next generation be afforded an opportunity to see these royal, regal, magnificent, and majestic ” gentlemen ” in the wild ?
This National Park is wonderful. The Govt of India should conserve, beautify and provide adequate tourist fecility to this Park. Alas ! Had GOI been active , this Park would have really been worth in the true sense of every word of it.
This is excellent’s excellent. Many thanks to Priya Malhotra for sending the nice photographs.

An excellent place to visit.
Let us, all tourists, resolve that we will not polute the natural beauty by throwing the coke and pepsi cans, plastic covers, which ,in turn endanger our wild life.
Dear All,
Many have submitted their individual comments on this post. I am armature photographer, have traveled extensively Jim Corbett, Kanha and Bandhavgrah tiger safaris. At Bandhavgrah, jusst 30 feet away from us, a tigress pounced upon a deer, caught and drag to some distance. At Kanha, wild dogs killed a small deer. All these are photographed! Any one interested to see my albums, may please send mail to , in due course I will mail them interesting photographs with commentaries!

Unfortunately cudn’t see ant tigers.. The river is awesome.. Never miss the chance of getting there.. V stayed in the Country inn resort for 3 days..
Jim National Corbette Park shall always reminds us of a Britisher who loved India and the hilly people in particular from the soul of his heart.
JIM ‘the legend’ is a part of Kumaoni folklore now.

Guyes !!! A very nice place to relax to advanture to c d beauty of Hills & Wild Life……………………..
We visited the Park this summer. Very nice place. But unfortunately even after roaming for two days, we could see everything but TIGER! It is very rare to see tigers roaming. You can see a rich wild life in the forest like elephants, deers, differant verity of birds even vultures but tigers are very very rare.
Wonderful! Really beautiful parks and animals!
Hello All,
Can somebody guide my how to go; where to stay; which travel agent to consult etc etc???

Wasim
The mother Nature is so beautiful that no one can compete. The whole world is beautiful and runs in hormony. Man has distrub whole ecology of the world.

what a nature. Really wonderful
i want to visit in nov12 can you help regarding booking and all , pls rply.
Our kashmir is more beautiful then corbett National Park.
Simply beautiful……
VERY nice and maintained park of India. From 5th to 7th oct 2012 Corbett mohotsav was celebrated …[email protected]
I had been there, its been heavily commercialized. There are very rare chance to see tiger coz, you been travel only to buffer zone. For core zone you need to check your wallet. The best way to go is take a cab to Jim Corbett fro delhi, its 4 hour run, or else take train to Rampur and from there go to JC.
hi thid is the beauty of nature
Fantastic place to visit.
very nice picture realy amazin
I am unlucky because i visited nainital several times . but i could not visit it . but i know about this forest . I read abou Jim Corbet how he killed that famous maneater .
I have been there . Its damn beautiful. We had been there for two days. But really if u wish to enjoy the corbett park go on the elephant safari and plan ur tour for 3-4 dyas. We stayed there in Hotel leela. It is really worth more than a five star with excellent food and hospitality and the property is very very beautiful.. Do visit uttarakhand and enjoy the Jim corbett park,.. Then further u can extend ur journey to nainital.
Jim Corbett National Park a very good place to visit. You can see antelopes, deers, monkeys, Ghadials – but regret I could not see any tigers. For a tiger one has to be very patient & ofcourse your luck should help you. Overall it was a very good trip for us & Uttrakhand is a sceneic place. Ye Hai INDIA.
It’s wonderful trip for the nature loving Travelers i, love to stay there for spend my Summer vacation
your presentation are so good plz keep going.
but in summer donot go to corbett national park.
Must visit atliest once in a lifetime .
thank God how beautiful our india is nice.
God’s beautiful creations. We men should protect the jungles and save Tigers. By this we will be able to maintain the ecology of the mother Earth.
My wife & I went to Corbett, not once but twice. First in Feb 2012, we could see no Tiger ever after two days of morning & evening safari rides, we were told we should have come in May so we went again in May 2012, Two days in the Jungle Park even after three safari no Tiger, but then, on the fourth and last safari in the evening, it was my wife who first spotted the Tiger even before the Guide or the Jeep driver did.. happy and contented we returned home
Nice One…….!!!!!
Give us information about the Trips in this area…..!!!!
